Social workers can play a vital role in supply in closing gaps. Cultural competence means understanding the value of culture as perceived by clients and appreciating how culture guides behavior and gives meaning to life. Culture shapes and influences individual health and mental health beliefs, family practices, human behavior, and even the outcomes of interventions (Ortiz, 2006). Cultural competence is the willingness of social workers to respond to the needs of clients arising from their culture and use their culture as a resource and strength to meet basic needs. Individuals with a language barrier find it difficult to access employment, transportation, legal responsibilities, and receiving assistance in each area are more difficult without a firm grasp of English. Language barriers, the stress of immigration, sociocultural contribute to the likelihood that immigrant families are more vulnerable (Oritiz, 2006). The other social issue related to Claudia's case is poverty. Poverty affects immigrant families. Often undocumented immigrant families find themselves in an insecure living environment.
