What was his purpose in doing this research?Jacob Riis was a Danish American best known for revealing the tyrannies, abuses, and miseries immigrants faced during the Gilded Age. Born in Ribe, Denmark, on May 3, 1849, he was the third out of fifteen children. As a young adult, he worked as a carpenter in Copenhagen, but in 1870, he emigrated to the United States. Unable to find suitable work, Riis spent many nights in police station lodging houses or even on the street. He worked a wide range of low paying jobs until 1873, when he found a position with a news bureau located in New York City.In 1877, Riis received a job as an official police reporter for the New York Tribune. Sincehe experienced the challenges of living in poverty throughout his life, Riis used this opportunity
