Hiram Revels became the first African American to be involved in the government of America. Despite his election, the blacks who held local offices within the nation were affected by intimidation and violence from the white supremacy. Some of the other offices which were held by the African Americans included public offices in newspaper editing and political organizers. However, top positions in the government, such as governors and mayors, were still restricted to the Whites during the reconstruction period.
