Zachary Kaye Materials Science Lab #2 February 19, 2007 Determination of Structure by Diffraction Techniques Abstract : This report will explain how diffraction is used to determine a materials structure. In this lab, displacements are measured and with them, I will determine the structure of a material. This experiment is extremely useful because it is a quick and efficient way to determine the structure of a material. Introduction : This experiment, which is used to determine the structure of a material, is a very valuable experiment. One might wonder why this experiment is useful. The answer is quite simple. If one can determine the structure of a material, many other features of said material can be discovered simply with this piece of information. For example, one can make a very good guess as to whether the material can be classified as a polymer, ceramic, or metal with its structure. This is relevant to class mainly because it is a real life example of the problems we do using closest packed planes, angles of diffraction, and inter- atomic displacements. With the structure, one can find out how strong a material will tend to be, as well as the atomic packing factor. It also leads to learning about the places in which the material will tend to shear if a shear stress is applied, which is extremely useful to know regarding failure. Now, in order to
