PHYS-1200 PHYSICS II SPRING 2006 Class 24 Activity: Electrons in Solids SOLUTION Today, you will investigate some properties of electrons in solids. First you will use a computer simulation to show how energy bands are formed in solids. A link to the computer program exists on the Physics II web page, under activities. It is called “Energy Band Creator”. You will need a Shockwave plug-in to use this page. To see the energy levels for a set of parameters, first fix the parameters at their desired values by using the slider arrows, or by typing the values in the windows provided, and then click on “Find Energies”. You can use the scale of the graph to estimate the values of the energies found, although the labels may be incorrect. Each small tick is 20 eV, with the large ticks representing 100 eV. The top of the well is at E = 0. An electron in an atom behaves similarly to the particle in the finite well we have been studying. But atoms tend to come in bunches, with rows of atoms next to each other in solids. We will investigate how these energy levels change when more atoms are added. Set the well width to
