Module 5Testing for the EFL/ESL Student5.1 IntroductionWe all had to take tests throughout our years in school. Sometimes these may have beenintimidating, even to the point of causing test anxiety among some of us. Think back to test takingwhen you were a student. When the teacher decided to give a pop quiz, how did you feel about theusefulness of the experience? Did you ever take a test and suspect it contained information that youhad never studied? How did you feel about taking standardized tests that were required by your highschool or college, such as the ACT or SAT in the U.S. or A Levels in the U.K.? Even the calmest peopleare sometimes rattled by test taking.On the other hand, did you ever feel a real sense of satisfaction when you got a good score on a test?Did you feel that taking a test confirmed that you were making progress in your study program? Didyou usually feel positively about taking tests when you were prepared and you thought the test wasfair?Your EFL/ESL students have to deal with similar issues throughout their journeys studying English.Usually, in order to be placed into an appropriate level in an English class, your students will first takea placement test. This placement test is often accompanied by an interview, which can be doneinformally, in a loosely structured conversation between the student and placement coordinator, orcan be done more formally as a Test of Spoken English (TSE). Once placed in a program of study, thestudents’ English classes require them to take regular quizzes on many different subjects, as well asmajor tests that determine whether they will pass on to the next level or not. Finally, in order toenter universities in English-speaking countries or prove their English levels to their employers,students may take standardized proficiency tests like the TOEFL (Test of English as a ForeignLanguage), TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication), the MELAB (Michigan EnglishLanguage Assessment Battery) or the IELTS (International English Language Testing System).In this module, you will survey these different tests and consider the abilities needed to administeror create tests. It will also familiarize you with some of the more common tests in our field.5.2 Placement TestsA placement test is used to determine the general language skills of a student, so that a school has abasis for determining the initial class-level for that student. Some schools have developed their ownplacement tests; others will use a standard placement test that they have purchased for use in theirschools. Most placement tests are objective: students choose among three to four possible answersfor each question or problem. These tests usually have at least three or four sections: listening,grammar, vocabulary and reading comprehension, and the tests range from 50 to 100 questions.
