Yeonjune ChoiProfessor Jessica HughesTheatre 2100 09 March 2020Indecent: A Glimpse of Anti-Semitism and Anti-Homosexuality Within the Early-Mid 1900’sThanks to the Ohio State University Department of Theatre, people of Columbus were given a chance to explore the development and showing of a daring play God of Vengeance, written by Sholem Asch. This play is unique as it tackles the issue of homosexuality within the early 1900’s.Indecent, is unique in the sense that all of the actors apart from the role of Lemml take multiple roles within the production. Rather than a clear role, actors are categorized into three different role types by age; ingenue, middle and elder. Thus, actors will play different characters that fit the age group that each actor is assigned to. For example, Eva Scherrer who plays the role of Chana will also play Rifkele or an immigrant and many more. Such goes for all other roles apart from Lemml. Within portraying different characters with the same actors, costumes play a big role. One can tell that the same actors play different characters, however through the clear differentiation of costumes the audience is given visual cues that indicate that the actor is playing a different role.
