STUDY GUIDE: EXAM 1 ******* CHAPTERS 18-22 ******* HISTORY 153 RADICAL REPUBLICANS - demanded a more aggressive prosecution of the war, the faster end to slavery and defeat of the Confederacy. Wanted to protect freedman. CHARLES SUMNER - him and Thaddeus Stevens led the radical republicans. WADE-DAVIS BILL - a bill that made southern states rough to get back into the union unless they would really change their ways. POCKETT VETOED BY LINCOLN. RECONSTRUCTION ACTS OF 1867 -divided southern states into 5 military regions, and provided the south with a more efficient government. FREEDMMAN’S BUREAU - a bureau to help the free blacks with employment, education and healthcare CARPETBAGGERS- Northern Republicans who came to south to get rich and take advantage. SCALAWAGS- southern white republican who took advantage of south during reconstruction 13 TH , 14 TH , 15 TH AMENDMENTS- outlaws slavery, gave blacks citizenship and rights, and allowed them to vote BLACK CODES- commonly associated with legislation passed by Southern states after the Civil War in an attempt to control the labor, movements and activities of African Americans. “LOST CAUSE” - By the 1880s, however, the Confederate Celebration movement had begun. Veterans turned out by the thousands to reenact major battles, to participate in parades, and to fraternize with other units. The revelry became even sweeter by the turn of the century when the Spanish-American War unified the country against a common enemy.
