Poverty Why does poverty exist? Eleven percent of the world’s population is living inextreme poverty, which is defined as surviving on only $1.90 a day. Isn’t that devastating? Poverty is common throughout the world around us in countries such as India, Asia, South America, and Africa. Even today, there are still people struggling to find shelter, feed their kids, and find warm clothing. There are many contributing factors to why poverty is such a global issue. The major causes are lack of education, no access to clean water and food, and fewer job opportunities.Did you know, 70 million people don’t get any education? Some countries are underdeveloped and do not have access to school buildings, school supplies, and teachers. Also, these countries do not have the appropriate transportation system to get the students back and forth, from and to school. Many parents can’tafford to send their children to school, they're forced to work at a young age just to support their basic needs.
