Hernan Cortez•Spanish conquistador•1519•led expedition of 200 men to Mexico to find heathens (non-Catholics) and gold. He conquered Tenochtitlan and established New Spain. Henry the Navigator•Organized systematic voyages down the coat of Africa looking to map the area and make it possible to have people sail down their to deliver spices. •1420-1430•This gave Portugese proprietary information about the area and allowed for shipping of spices across Asia via boat instead of walking Vasco de GamaFerdinand and Isabella•King and Queen of Spain during the rise of nation states.•1492•They knew Portugese had knowledge of sailing routes to get Indian spices and wanted that power. Christopher Columbus said the earth was only 6,000 miles around and he could sail west from Spain to the East Indies and Ferdinand and Isabella give their approval. Columbus lands near Bahamas and finds the island of Hispaniola. Aragon and CastielHispaniola•Island near Bahamas•1492•Columbus lands here instead of in the East Indies where he planned to find spices. He still thinks he is in India and calls the native Indians. Montezuma•Emperor of Aztec Empire and Chief Priest of the Empire •In Aztec religion history goes in cycles and he was convinced a cycle was about to end and they would experience a cataclysmic revolution. This was when Cortez and Spaniard arrived carrying cross symbol (resembling Quetzacoatyl’s) and he
let them pass free. Quetzalcoatl•One of the most powerful Aztec Gods. In Aztec mythology and religion, Quetzalcoatl had many centuries before slept with his sister and had been expelled from the kingdom. He was waiting for an opportunity to come back and it was said that one day he would come back. In Aztec religion, history operates in cycles. •1518•The Spaniards carried with them a cross, which strangely resembled Quetzalcoatl’s symbol of a cross. Montezuma became scared that the great God Quetzalcoatl was back so he let them go as they pleased which allowed them to conquer the Aztec empire. Encomienda System•The monarch of Spain rewarded leaders of conquest with Indian villages. The Indians who lived on the settlements provided the conquistadors with labor tribute in exchange for legal protection and religious guidance. •1520’s•After the conquest of Mexico, the Spanish crown needed to bring the conquistadores under royal authority, which was difficult because they were ambitious and interested in their own wealth and glory. This made the colonizers more dependent on the king because he legitimized theit title.
