Montezuma Emperor of Aztec Empire and Chief Priest of the Empire In Aztec religion history goes in cycles and he was convinced a cycle was about to end and they would experience a cataclysmic revolution. This was when Cortez and Spaniard arrived carrying cross symbol (resembling Quetzacoatyl’s) and he
let them pass free. Quetzalcoatl One of the most powerful Aztec Gods. In Aztec mythology and religion, Quetzalcoatl had many centuries before slept with his sister and had been expelled from the kingdom. He was waiting for an opportunity to come back and it was said that one day he would come back. In Aztec religion, history operates in cycles. 1518 The Spaniards carried with them a cross, which strangely resembled Quetzalcoatl’s symbol of a cross. Montezuma became scared that the great God Quetzalcoatl was back so he let them go as they pleased which allowed them to conquer the Aztec empire. Encomienda System The monarch of Spain rewarded leaders of conquest with Indian villages. The Indians who lived on the settlements provided the conquistadors with labor tribute in exchange for legal protection and religious guidance. 1520’s After the conquest of Mexico, the Spanish crown needed to bring the conquistadores under royal authority, which was difficult because they were ambitious and interested in their own wealth and glory. This made the colonizers more dependent on the king because he legitimized theit title.
