September 29, 2011 Gary Schrone Lecture August 1947 India and Pakistan India was partitioned …very deadly -> marked the Pakistani view of india forever (got the least resources as well) August of 1953 Overthrow of the Prime Minister Mohammed Mosadek (skah) For Iran, for us, no one knew what it even was…but for Iran it plagues the relationship to this day Christmas of 1979 - Soviets Invaded Afghanistan Brought civil war to the country and war every day since then…changed our relationships with Afghanistan as well. September of 2001 in Afghanistan Massood was killed. November of 1979 Iran. Taking of the US embassy by students (defines our view of Iran…which to Iranians us not equal to us taking Mosadek) Schrone Speaks on 1 st team into the Panshir Valley 9/9/01 reaction, Masood was a tragedy to the country bc his Northern Alliance was going to be almost shaken apart by his death. His fear: we would’ve been put out of the country entirely if Taliban could take power in the gap left by NA 9/11 happened…if it didn’t, Taliban may have had their chance.
