Its main advantage is that it requires only two bearings in either the single or two crank construction. The design procedure for the side or overhung crankshaft is same as that for centre crankshaft. Let us now design the side crankshaft by considering the two crank positions, i.e. when the crank is at dead centre (or when the crankshaft is subjected to maximum bending moment) and when the crank is at an angle at which the twisting moment is maximum.
