Sociology 1001.10 6/28/11 class notes - Deviance o Any behavior or condition of existence that is in violation of or departs from social norms. It is NOT always negative. Where DEVIEANCE is a violation of folkways and mores, CRIME is a violation specifically of laws in the normative systems. o Myths of Deviance Myth = Certain acts or conditions are inherently deviant Fact = Deviance is relative to TIME, PLACE, and CIRCUMSTANCE (for example, killing in self defense, wartime killing, capital punishment ect.) Myth = Deviant acts or conditions are statistically uncommon Facts = some behaviors or conditions that occur only rarely are not considered deviant (for example, graduating with a 4.0, getting a perfect score on the SAT, running for President ect.) Myth = So-called normal people do not engage in deviant behavior Fact = Most everyone at some time has violated a norm, including laws (for example, the survey we took in the beginning of class.)
