Poling 1 Ethan Poling Drake Summary and Response Essay October 25, 2020 “Who are You and What are You Doing Here?” Have you ever noticed how disconnected college students are towards their studies? This goes for not only the students, but the professors and administrators as well. Even though they present themselves for the college, everyone has their own agenda that they focus on. This mentality that most people have, makes it challenging for those who truly want to earn a degree at the college. In Mark Edmundson’s “Who are You and What are You Doing Here?” he states that life at college is really away from college. Students may attend college to get a degree and further their education, but their focus lies elsewhere. College presents itself as an opportunity where one can create a social life outside of their K-12 education back at home. Professors reserve themselves so they can further their own studies and the administrators are too busy trying to keep everyone happy to care too much about the college anyway. Edmundson brings up the point that “university education is a means to an end” (407). Students only attend so that they may have options available to them in the future.
