Monday LAB 9:Corrosion of MetalsMSE 227 LABSTRACTThe effect of corrosion on two brasses and two 1018 steel specimens were determined throughtwo different mediums: salt water and antifreeze through electrochemistry. It was determined thateach specimen, when exposed to salt water (without inhibitor) had a higher corrosion rate thanthe specimens that were exposed to antifreeze (inhibitor).PROCEDUREGiven two samples of brass and 1018 steel, the samples were polished and etched by using 400grit, 600 grit sandpaper and 1-micron powder to observe its microstructure after corrosion. TheSurface of each specimen was observed under the microscope. The surface should be scratch-free. For the apparatus, 400cc of tap water and about one teaspoon of salt was added to a beaker.One specimen, either the brass or steel was placed into the appropriate apparatus. The wire ofeach specimen was bent to keep it in place and to ensure that the reference electrode and sampledid not touch.The leads from the EG&G VeraStat machine were then accorded accordingly to theelectrochemical cell: green wire to sample (working electrode), red wire to counter electrode(red), and white wire to reference electrode (ground).
