Grand theories can be very complicated and they can contain wide-ranging ideas thatrelate to the nursing practice. Imogene King’s theory is the theory of goal attainment. Her theoryis multidimensional. It has three different systems that are interacting. These systems areinterpersonal, personal and social systems. (Caceres, 2015) Inside her grand theory she explainsthe different factors that may interfere with goal achievement, each connecting to a system.Factors of the interpersonal system are perception, self-growth and development, time andpersonal space. Factors of the personal system are communication, role, stress and coping.Factors of the social system include authority, power, control and status. King’s theory alsodiscussions the interpersonal relationship that are between nurses and their patients. She statedthat goal-setting and goal attainment are fundamental for the nurse-client relationship (Caceres,2015) She believed that if the nurse and patient cannot understand each other, the situation, orcommunicate then their goals would most likely not be reached.Margaret Newman’s theory is the theory of health as expanding consciousness.
