Joshua RodriguezWeek 7 AssignmentCHFD220The impact a message that shows a perspective of sexuality, such as the one delivered by Counselman Joel Burns about his experiences while dealing with discovering his sexual orientation (Burns, 2010), would have a positive effect on a young person in a similar situation and on an adult, who is intolerant of the LGBTQ community. Both people receiving this message would share similarities and differences in the way it was interpreted but overall would bring forth a positive change in perspective. Additionally, it would open the doors to conversation to cause a possible paradigm shift of views based on the idea that humans are not without flaws, yet they are humans and are deserving of life. First, receiving Joel Burns’ message would bring a positive change in perspective becauseit would highlight a couple of key factors such as tolerance and hope. For example, in the message Joel stated that he had faced criticism, bullying, and even alluded to attempting suicide due to the treatment and hopelessness he faced in his younger years. Later in the video, he talkedabout how things would get better as they did for him. People became more tolerant and accepting, he found the love of his life which made him happy, and even the man that he thought would be least accepting, his father, was accepting and loving toward him. For the person dealing with the issues of sexuality, the hope would allow them to push past the bad days and understand that it was just a small step in the path to happiness. Also, it would allow that person to realize that tolerance grows as people mature and grow.
