Hofstra University Chemistry Laboratory Safety GuideYou are in a chemistry laboratory to see chemistry concepts in action and develop your labtechnique. Safety is a big part of the lab experience. Your safety and the safety of those aroundyou are of utmost importance. There is no substitute for safety and it is everyone’s responsibilityto conduct themselves safely.By coming to class, you are agreeing to follow the safety rules, #s 1-26, listed below:1.Individuals with medical conditions (e.g. allergies, chemical sensitivity), or if you arenursing, pregnant, or become pregnant, please consult your physician before using thelaboratory.2.Students are not allowed to work alone in the laboratory.Appropriate Laboratory Attire, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and Fume Hoods3.Closed-toe shoes must be worn in the lab to ensure protection from dropped glassware,chemical spills, etc. Flip flops, or open-toed shoes are not allowed.4.Long hair and loose clothing should be confined. Long pants are required.5.Eye protection in the form of safety glasses or goggles must be worn at all times in thelab. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you must wear safety glasses or goggles overthem.6.Wear gloves in the lab at all times unless you are working with an open flame orflammable materials. Inspect gloves prior to use and replace old gloves at any sign ofdamage, including if your hands naturally get too sweaty from prolonged glove wearing.7.Safely remove gloves by only touching the inside of the glove; avoid touching the outsideby inverting the gloves. Dispose of the gloves appropriately and wash your hands. Do notreuse the gloves. See images in the “Safe Glove Removal Guide” at the end of theserules.8.Fume hoods should always be used when:a.Using a known or suspected carcinogen, reproductive hazard, sensitizer, acutelytoxic, flammable, or highly reactive chemicalRevised 8/20201
