English 1A Professor Vora February 12, 2009 Reading Response: “Clutter” I found the essay “Clutter” by William Zinsser boring. The topic of word clutter seemed to make the essay a bunch of clutter. I felt that my brain was going in numerous directions reading so many different topics about clutter. I did not enjoy the essay because it was talking about language, writing, and words. However, I did agree with the author about clutter. For example, the sentence “Beware, then, of the long word that’s no better than the short word: “assistance” (help), “numerous” (many), “facilitate” (ease), “individual” (man or woman)….” (192) was a cluttered sentence itself. There was no need for so many examples. “My Last Duchess” The poem “My Last Duchess” by Robert Browning was not appealing to me. I did not

Unformatted text preview: enjoy the poem because I had to keep reading it repeatedly to understand what was going on. I did like the author’s style of writing the poem. The poem had a great rhythm and flow and I liked how every two lines of the poem rhymed. From this poem I could picture a lot of things the author was writing about. For example, I pictured the duchess as a warm hearted and thankful woman. I pictured many men trying too hard to impress her. I also can picture the duchess “painted on the wall” (185). I imagine the author as trying to please the duchess and control others surrounding him. Even though I did not like the poem I liked the authors writing style....
