Lab 7: Determination of Fe by UV-vis Spectroscopy I. Objective: To use UV-vis spectroscopy and a calibration curve to determine the absorbance of an unknown sample containing Fe and use Beers law to find Ɛ based on max absorbance. II. Material. 1,10-phenanthroline solution, standard iron(II) stock solution, hydroxylammonium chloride solution, sodium acetate solution, unknown solution, volumetric flasks, pipet, micro pipet, UV-vis Spectroscope, test tubes III. Procedures: 1)pipet in 5 volumetric flasks 5,10,15,20,25 mL of standard iron(II) solution in that order and label according to volume 2)pour 50 mL of DI water in a sixth flask to serve as blank 3)pipet 12mL of unknown solution in a seventh flask 4)in order pipet into each flask a)1mL hydroxylammonium chloride b)5mL 1,10-phenanthroline solution c)8mL sodium acetate solution 5)swirl flasks to mix solution then add to mark DI water. Place stopper in each and invert a few times to insure solution is homogeneous 6)wait 15 minutes for color to fully form
