Comparison/ Contrast Literary Analysis Outline Step 1: 1. What novel did you choose? The Great Gatsby 2. What secondary text did you choose? (Can be one from below.) These are works which compare thematically to your work. Here are some suggestions: The Great Gatsby (published 1925) Poem "The Waste Land" by T..S Eliot depicts the 1920’s. Not American Lit, but comparisons can still be made. Zora Neale Hurston literature would depict life for African Americans during the 1920’s, as well as some of the important themes. Poem "Harlem" (Dream Deferred) by Langston Hughes. Short story "A Rose for Emily" by William Faulkner - similarities between Jay and Emily and their need to live in the past. Short story "The Jelly Bean" by F. Scott Fitzgerald The Bean Trees (published 1988) Poems "Woman Work" or "Phenomenal Woman" by Maya Angelou – late 70’s/early 80’s – depicts the burden of womanhood/role of women/gender roles/what it means to be a woman. Short story "Mirror Image" by Lena Coakley – great for students who enjoy science fiction. Comparisons can be made between Alice and Taylor and their search for self- worth and an identity. Short Story "Marigolds" by Eugenia Collier- theme "loss of innocence". Novel Life of Pi by Yann Martel Novel Pigs in Heaven by Barbara Kingsolver – it’s a sequel to The Bean Trees & it deals with Turtle’s adoption, the rights of the group (tribe) vs the rights of the individual, the definition of family, what we do for love, and more.
