1 Name Name of Professor Subject Date Most people would not allow themselves to be subjected to abuse and maltreatment by those in power. Even the most helpless man can bring about change if he unites with his fellow victimized citizens. Self-help was a movement by workers to unionize and revolt against their bosses due to their abusive work practices. It started after the First World War and was catalyzed by the 5-day general strike organized by the Industrial Workers of the World in Seattle, Washington. The proletariat or working class that gains class consciousness will be able to overpower the bourgeoisie or the owners, as coined by Karl Marx in his idea of communism. Since the first protests were non-violent, authorities and lobbyists had no valid, justified nor legal reason to force the workers to stop. Hundreds of thousands more workers got together to protest the cruelties in the capitalist system. By refusing to work, no products may be made, and no products could be sold nor bought therefore countering capitalism.
