SCI 201-1802A-04Denise Albina5/05/2018SCI201 Unit 4 Individual ProjectMunicipal solid waste is often referred to trash which mostly consists of items which are discarded on a daily. This can be anything from food waste to plastic or clothes. Before industrialization everything would be gathered and taken to an open landfill and openly burned in an attempt to reduce the waste being brought in. Today we have we have two commonly used methods of getting rid of this waste without really any concern of its location. The first one is thewaste we create is not reusable and is sent to a landfill which is heavily regulated and the second major way is to send to be recycled. An open dump is an unofficial location in which waste is discarded because it is inexpensive or convenient. For example when I was growing up near the neighborhood there was an open field that was so over grown that at night people would drive up and dump old couches, TVs, mattresses, even old tires and car batteries. The reason these kinds of dumps are a problem is because there is no concern for how it will affect the environment. Early landfills where a way to help reduce the amount of trash that would be dumped on streets without care as well to get away from open dumps. Open dumps where not regulated and had a high possibility to contaminate water supply. Another problem that was found is that it would be burned to reduce the amount of waste that was sitting. These kinds of dumps also remained open an attracted pickers and put their lives at risk. When we converted to early landfills the government set regulation to address problems that came along with open landfills. With early landfills the government set into place regulations
