Patrick Appiah African and African American History Notes Compromise of 1877- Controversial because Samuel Tilden won the popular vote but because Rutherford B Hayes was willing to compromise with Redeemers he was elected In the 1880’s southern democrats steadily disenfranchised black voters and soon the political system was virtually all white Most black voters remained loyal republicans though the Republican party was no longer what it had been Many farmers felt betrayed as the Industrial Revolution transformed American Society Though the farmers were absolutely essential to America, wealth was concentrated in the hands of the large corporations, banks and railroad tycoons Black Involvement in politics survived reconstruction, but it did not survive the 19 th century. Division within the Democratic party as well as the rise of the populists contributed to the total removal of black people from southern politics As businessmen got richer, farmers got poorer because big business exploited farms
