Chapter 4 System unit- case that contains electronic components of the computer used to process data Includes: o Drive bay(s) o Power supply o Sound card o Video card o Processor o Memory Motherboard (aka system board)- main circuit board of system unit, computer chip contains integrated circuits (in chip) Processor (CPU) contains: Control unit- directs & coordinates most of the operations in the computer Registers- temporarily hold data & instructions Cooling: heat sinks, liquid cooling technology

Arithmetic logic unit (ALU)- performs arithmetic, comparison, and other operations Pipelining- processor begins 2 nd instruction before completing machine cycle for first Parallel processing- uses multiple processors at once to execute a single program or task Computer data representation: Digital, on or off Binary system- uses two unique digits (0 and 1) by presence/absence of electrical charge o Bits and bytes o 8 bits = 1 byte (single character in computer)
