This preview shows page 1 out of 1 page.

Lighter-than-air aviation was known as airships. In the early 1900’s, hit the skies and became popular immediately. Airships were the first manmade flying machines to take on the skies. The airship, Zeppelin LZ1, took flight just 3 years prior to the Wright Brothers making there famous first successful flight of an airplane. The world viewed them as a technological marvel at the time. During World War 1, airships played a key role as military aircraft providing aerial bombing support. Airships seem to have a bright future in the growing world economy but that all came to a halt when the world saw how dangerous a hydrogen filled balloon could be. In 1937, the Hindenburg exploded into a massive fireball during landing in, Lakehurst, New Jersey, it is said that most of the passengers survived (Reed, 2015).
