To graduate from a program, students require a number of Liberal Studies credits. Ryerson courses are correspondingly designated Professional, Professionally-related or Liberal Studies. The Liberal Studies courses are further divided into Lower-level (normally for first and second year credit) and Upper-level (normally for third and fourth year credit) courses. Students may not use a Professionally-related Psychology course for a Liberal Studies credit or vice versa, nor may you use a Lower-level Liberal Studies course for Upper-level Liberal Studies credit. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course introduces students to the methods, theories, findings and practical applications of research in the area of child development. The focus is on describing the significant changes in physical, cognitive, social and emotional development and on explaining why these changes occur. This course also discusses the immediate contextual influences of families, peer groups, and schools as well as the broader contextual influences of subculture, culture, and historical era. Students are expected to read the assigned chapters in preparation for each class. The lectures elaborate and extend the materials presented in the textbook. The lectures may skip some content of the textbook and they may contain materials not covered in the textbook. Some videos may not be available outside class or during office hours. So students are expected to attend each lecture and take notes.This course is on D2L where students can access to all course-relevant information. The PowerPoint slides with transcripts will be posted on D2L before each class. All changes to the course schedule will be announced in class and/or on D2L. Students are responsible to check D2L regularly to keep updated.
