What kinds of comments are made about Europe at the beginning of the story? Europe was described as an obscured place, very gloomy and nearly all the street is empty. 2. What kind of person is Aschenbach? What is his personal history? Aschenbach’s personality is self- disciplined and often prevails as an artist. His parents want their son to endeavor greatness and forced him into constant studying for him to have a well- educated background. He was going to achieve no matter cost, even if his health was at stake. 3. How is Aschenbach affected by the man in the cemetery? Who is this man? What does he represent? Aschenbach meets a red-headed man who he realizes that the man is not a local. The man may not have existed because his persona comes as Aschenbach’s most inner desires and his red hair represents sin or the desire of the flesh. Also, his straw hat is possibly his desire to travel off.
