Lecture Six: The New Cosmopolitan Society Lecture Reading – Sherman, pages 97-115, Document 3.3 I.The Hellenistic World A.Money and the Cosmopolitan Economy 1.Standardized language – common Greek (administration/business) Greek mindset as well 2.Credit – trading without currency 3.Coinage – more uniform in order to compare currency 4.Command economies – kings realize they must act with respect to the city, kings want to take control of cities’ economies (monopolies). 5.Wars – use economy to fund military/gain more control B.Armies in the Hellenistic World 1.Mercenaries – paid soldiers who would go to the highest bidder, much more looting and pillaging 2.War elephants – offer military advantage (siege tower), and moving heavy equipment 3.Slavery – more poor people, losers, whole cities wiped out and people enslaved C.Life in Cosmopolitan Cities 1.(Wealthy) Women’s freedom – more freedom to move back and forth, men’s freedom decreased, gender distinctions matter less
