Discussion Questions for EUH 3121 Fall of Rome Birth of Europe Discussion 4 Karyn Trong Charlemagne's Letter to Bishop Baugaulf 1.What is the main concern the letter indicates, and what corrective does Charlemagne desire? The letter illustrates Charlemagne's desire to promote learning in his empire. He wants education to be implemented more strongly throughout the empire. He emphasizes that through knowledge, one can gain better understanding of scriptures and express themselves without error. 2.What in the letter indicates Charlemagne's ability to make such demands of the churches and monasteries? It is seen that Charlemagne is able to make such demands because not only is he suggesting it for the rest of the empire but he suggests it for the Bishop as well. Also toward the end of the letter Charlemagne suggests that if the Bishop wants to remain “in his favor” that he should send copies of this letter to all his fellow bishops and monasteries. Agobard of Lyons 3.Why does Agobard say he is writing to Louis the Pious? He is writing to Louis the Pious about the division of the empire. 4.What are the main problems he sees in Louis' change of heart about dividing his kingdom?
