Patrick Cooper June 12 2016 1-1 A Novel Study's End Childhood's End is a 1953 science fiction novel by the British author Arthur C. Clarke. This story is mainly set in various places across earth. Clarke's idea for the book began with his short story "Guardian Angel" (1946), which he expanded into a novel in 1952, incorporating it as the first part of the book, "Earth and the Overlords". Childhood's End became Clarke's first successful novel and Clarke considerers Childhood's End one of his favourite novels. The story follows the peaceful alien invasion of Earth by the mysterious Overlords, this story’s antagonists, and their master the Overmind. The Overlords arrival begins decades of apparent utopia under an indirect alien rule, but at the cost of human identity and culture. The protagonists of this story are an ensemble of human characters including Stormgren, George Greggson, Jan Rodricks , and an Overlord named Karellen.
