Mentes Zorba LAB REPORT Experiment 5: Phase Equilibria Introduction The objective of this experiment is to investigate the phase equilibrium of two binary systems and determine the phase diagram. Also, the effect of non-equilibrium cooling rates on microstructure of the material will be examined. Experimental Procedure In the first part of the experiment, a low carbon steel sample is to be examined for its composition using phase equilibrium methods and phase diagrams. The sample is first polished with 600 grit sand paper and then etched with 2% Nitol solution to expose the microstructure. Then, an image of this microstructure is captured with optical microscope. This image is to be analyzed for its phases and composition. The second part of the experiment involves taking hardness measurements of two different steel samples. A sample of 1045 plain-carbon steel and a 4140 low-alloy steel will be tested for their hardness with Rockwell testing machine. The measurements will be first taken at each 1 mm interval for the first 2 cm and then at 2mm intervals for the next two samples.
