Mentes Zorba LAB REPORT Experiment 2: Microstructure and Properties Introduction The objective of this experiment was to investigate the microstructure of a specific material and find a relationship between the microstructure and properties of the material. This is to be done by first measuring the hardness and then revealing the grain structures with certain chemical and physical methods; and then magnifying the grains with an optical microscope. Experimental Procedure First, the hardness of a brass sample is determined by the Rockwell Hardness testing machine on the F scale. Three measurements are recorded and the average hardness value is calculated and rounded to whole number. This value is written on the side of the sample. For the microstructure investigation, a sample which is already measured for hardness and already mounted in epoxy will be used. The sample is first polished to remove any scratches. This is done by several steps of polishing. First, the sample is grinded on sandpaper at different angles. Then, using several slurry mixtures the sample
