Notes “Leadership in a Multicultural Setting” Definition Good leaders are made not born. If you have the desire and willpower, you can become an effective leader. Good leaders develop through a never ending process of self-study, education, training, and experience (Jago, 1982) Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish an objective and directs the organization in a way that makes it more cohesive and coherent. (Jago, 1982) Although we will work with leadership as a step-by-step process, it is clearly an art as well. “I define leadership as the art of mobilizing others to want to work for shared aspirations, resulting in intended, real change that meets people’s enduring needs.” (Kouzes & Posner, The Leadership Challenge) According to Dictionary.com, leadership is an act or instance of guidance. According to the book The 5 Traits of Leadership in Small Businesses, " Leadership is a winning combination of personal traits and the ability to think and act as a leader, a person who directs the activities of others for the good of all. Anyone can be a leader..." The Birth of a Leader It implies taking two paths: Process Leadership and Trait Leadership (Norhtouse, 2007) “Leadership has changed and what used to be thought as born leaders is now defined as manufactured leaders.” (Clark, 1997) Qualities Creates broadly shared aspirations. Uses these shared aspirations to motivate and mobilize others. Enables others to work for these shared aspirations. Creates a solution that will result in an intended change. The change must meet people’s enduring needs. (Erdmann, Syfr) A good leader has an exemplary character. A good leader is enthusiastic about their work or cause and also about their role as leader.
