1 Homework 7 (9 pts) due Oct. 28 (1.5 pts.) 5.46 (p.218). The inside diameter of a randomly select piston ring is a random variable with mean value 12 cm and standard deviation 0.04 cm. a) If is the sample mean diameter for a random sample of n = 16 rings, where is the sampling distribution of centered, and what is the standard deviation of the distribution? b) Answer the questions posed in part (a) for a sample size of n = 64 rings. c) For which of the two random samples, the one of part (a) or the one of part (b), is more likely to be within 0.01 cm of 12 cm? Explain your reasoning. part b). Since the variance is smaller in part b) than part a), the spread of the average values is less, so is more likely to be closer to the actually value. Remember that we have stated that most calculated values likely to be within two standard deviations of the actual value. In part a) this would be 0.02 cm and in part b), this would be 0.01 cm which is what is asked in the question.

### What students are saying

• As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

• I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

• The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
