POS 01:39:15 Jose Alvarez Critical Thinking 4.4 1. Essentially the Socialist Party’s criticism of the two-party monopoly is that they claim to encourage change, yet do nothing to enforce the change despite the fact that they have the ability to. The party participates in local government so that it can deal with progressive changes that the two major parties seem uninterested in doing themselves, and through the local governments will eventually become a major party and put an end to things like the power of big business through public ownership and workers' control. 2. The winner-take-all and plurality voting system both work against third-party candidates and discourage voters from electing such candidates by not forcing a victory through majority. The two major parties monopolize the winner-take-all and plurality systems and make third party candidates seem lesser than they are, almost insignificant. They two major parties try to disregard the third party candidates by having the media only cover the Democratic and Republican candidates and essentially ignore the other candidates or barley mention them First Primary Election Candidates Percent of Vote Needed to Go On to Run-off Election A. Republican Party 41.3% B. Republican Party 38.7% C. Republican Party 15.4% D. Republican Party 4.6% Run-off Primary Election Candidates Percent of Vote Needed to Win the Nomination A. Republican Party 56.9% B. Republican Party 43.1% 3. 4. I believe that a minority candidate, such as an African-American, would have a greater chance of winning an election under a run-off system of voting. The reason for this is that if the minority candidate is well known and liked in the area where the election is taking
