Setting/s and Significance: California, specifically Arroyo Blanco Topanga canyon. The significance is that it shows the difference between the environments such as the “gated community” compared to the land where Candido and America are barely getting by. Along with that, the fact that it takes place in California makes it easy to show theimmigration issues that Delaney sees and that Candido and America have to face. B. Characters: Name: Role in the Story: Significance: Adjectives: Delaney:He is the husband of Kyra and the stepfather of Kyra’s child, Jordan. Delaney undergoes the most changes throughout the novel. The most drastic change was that Delaney went from being an average liberal-minded person, who was opposed to putting gates up in his community to becoming severely racist. He was very focused on defending his community from immigrants or any intruder such as coyotes. His favorite thing to do is have four hours of the day set aside for writing, and when he takes a break he goes on nature hikes. He is a raging racist and feels that Candido ruined his life. Kyra: Kyra is Delaney's wife and has a son, Jordan. She is a dedicated realtor and knowsthat immigrants threaten the sales of homes. Kyra becomes obsessed with the height of her fence because both of her dogs were eaten by coyotes and the fence then becomes a parallel of the wall around Arroyo Blanco. America: America is Candido’s wife who is 17 years old. She is forced to work whenCandido is injured, and his gender reversal puts a strain on the relationship betweenCandido and America. Jose Navidad: Jose is the Antagonist in the novel, causing trouble for Delaney on a hike, Kyra at a house she was selling, and Candido and America multiple times throughout the novel. He raped America and ripped up her dress. Jose is always described as sinisters by other characters, and he is always wearing a backwards baseball hat, has light eyes and lighter skin. He is described as half white and half and half mexican which allows him to appear more menacing because it is as if he doesn’t belong to either community. C.
