COMM101 CH6 Discussion: Non-verbal Communication Point Value: 53 This Discussion requires student to focus on issues related to Nonverbal Communication. The text and CH6 „notes‟ document presents 9 ‘forms’ of NVC (Haptics, Chonemics, Proximics, etc .) and 6 roles’ of NVC ('repetition', 'substitution', 'contradiction', etc.) Discussion Goals: a. For students to demonstrate an understanding/awareness of: Contextual Frames , Nonverbal Communication Forms and Nonverbal Communication Roles . b. For students to gain awareness of Nonverbal Communication Emic Variations. Discussion Tasks : 1. Reflect: Students reflect on a situation in which NVC created a challenge during a communication act. 2. Connect: Students converse with a cultural informant to have them explain how NVC is utilized by members of their culture, and then report on their findings. 3. Detect: Students develop awareness of alternate cultural perspectives by reviewing and responding to classmate posts. This Discussion has 2 Basic Parts Part 1: Reflecting on an experience in which NVC created a challenge to a communication act you were involved in or witnessed. Part 2: Presenting/Explaining 2 different ' Forms of NVC utilized by the cultural group of a cultural 'informant'. Format your work by presenting the highlighted/underlined headings below in your post. PART 1 COMMUNICATORS: (Provide labels indicating the cultural backgrounds of communicators in the situation you focus on in Part 1 here) THE CONTEXTUAL FRAME: (Identify the 'Contextual Frame'[a CH4 concept] that communicators in the situation you focus on were experiencing here. To do so accurately, see the „advice‟below.) THE SITUATION/CHALLENGE TO COMM: (Provide here a brief overview of the interaction and an explanation of why the use of NVC was problematic here). Address the followinga.Generally characterize the situation. Was it humorous, dangerous, harmless, serious? b.Identify/Describe the NVC that was problematic. c.Provide thoughts on if/how/why the NVC you identify was interpreted differently by communicators or simply not recognized by a communicator. e.Explain whether or not the communication challenge (due to NVC) was resolved or not.
