2 Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Municipal solid waste is considered to be anything that is a nonliquid material that has been thrown away. This municipal waste is generated from cities, towns and villages by residential homes, commercial businesses, and schools. In Texas MSW is defined as solid waste resulting from or incidental to municipal, community, commercial, institutional, and recreational activities, that include rubbish, and dead animals (Keller, 2019). Basically, waste is any material that nobody wants and takes up unwanted space. There would seem that there would not be any kind of problem in waste disposal, but there is, improper disposal can cause major environment and ecological damage. These damages can include air pollution, soil contamination, surface water and groundwater pollution as well as infectious diseases that are spread by rodents and insects. Even though waste can have many problems, it can have many beneficial uses as well. There are three main beneficial uses that solid waste can be used for, that include energy recovery through incineration at refuse power plants. There are two ways that incineration systems use to recover energy; first is through mass burning, in which raw unprocessed solid waste is fed directly into the furnace. Second is when refuse is shredded and separated into combustible and noncombustible waste material before being fed into the furnace (Nathanson, Schneider, 2015). Composting is another beneficial use for solid waste because it provides a useful commodity and reduces the quantity and space that is taken up. Before any composting takes place, the solid waste must be separated so that only compostable materials will be used.
