John Xu 10/16/07 Response 10 Magubane challenges the common representation of Sarah Baartmann through his idea that she should be considered in the context of historical purposes. As an example, he talks about the way in which Cuvier described Baartmann as being similar to apes reflects his own fear about the “potential political equality of his fellow Frenchmen” (821). Magubane also talks about the assumption that is made when Baartmann is considered to be black. Consequently, according to Magubane, Baartmann’s traits are attributed to the entire African population. However, Baartmann cannot simply be classified as being black. “Travelers made much of the fact that the Khoikhoi were not Black or brown but yellow or tawny and thus different in important respects from Africans living further North, as well as those on the West Coast” (822). Therefore, Magubane challenges the very perspectives that people take when viewing the world. He describes society as the shaping force in science. This is exemplified when he talks about the
