Succession of pitches or notes Pitch = frequency = note o A = 440 Pitches/ note o A steady frequency Frequency o The speed/ frequency of the vibrations from a sound Octave o A=220 or 880 o Dividing the octave Interval Whole step Half step Scale Major Minor o The same note just an octave down o The frequency divided by 2 or halved o Most cultures recognize this But how to divide the octave up varies with culture We divide it up in twelve Interval o The distance between one pitch/frequency and another o Steps Whole step Between one note and another Half step Between a note and the sharp or flat note next to it Chromatic scale o Going up and hitting all the notes between C and the C that is the next octave up o The basis of most music is a scale It is the starting point o Musical alphabet A, B, C, D, E, F, G No sharp between E to F, and C to D
