John Xu Technology as a Medium for Change in Society When examining the development of technology, there is always the question of whether technology shapes society or vice versa. In The Social Shaping of Technology, MacKenzie and Wajcman present various viewpoints regarding the influence of technology and how technology is influenced. While it is possible to find examples that represent technology shaping society or the other way around, it is important to realize that even the basic research leading to technological advancements are still a product of human interest, while at the same time, technology inevitably shapes society because it changes how people interact with each other. The cell phone, a relatively new development in the history of computer technology is a convenient method of communication that is now widely used. Previously, the size and difficulty of movement restricted phone calls to household occurrences.
