There is evidence that the city was burned to the ground around the same time that some ancient historians placed the Trojan War ii. Myth: 1. It is a traditional story, transmitted orally, thus many events could have been embellished upon or falsified 2. Homer wrote down the Iliad hundreds of years after the story takes place iii. Both 1. The Trojan War may be a myth that is based in history 2. Elaborated upon or exaggerated, but not falsified b. Why is Mycenaean civilization important for myth? i. Many Greek legends probably originated during the Mycenaean period 1. Coincidence between centers of power in Mycenaean times and important locations in Greek legend: a. Mycenae of Agamemnon, Tiryns of Heracles, Thebes of Oedipus 2. Tales could only be transmitted orally ii. Linear B – what is written in it that is important for myth? 1.
