Joseph Faria-Poynter EARTHSS 1 Professor Ferguson October 7, 2020 2020 ESS 1 Discussion 1: Earth as an interconnected system and feedback loops 1. During this course I hope you will begin to see Earth as an amazingly complex interconnected system. To get started, see if you can think of connections (transferring energy or matter) between the different “spheres”. I have included one as an example. For full credit there should be at least 2 links connecting each sphere to the others, making 12 in total. If you get stuck ask your TA, LA, or other groups for ideas! Atmosphere – Hydrosphere: Rainfall creates greater water supplies in oceans, lakes, etc. Water evaporates from oceans back the atmosphere Atmosphere – Geosphere: The atmosphere allows soil and rocks to heat Heavy winds can cause erosion in rock formations Atmosphere – Biosphere: Animals breathe oxygen and expel carbon dioxide into the atmosphere Plants consume carbon dioxide and expel oxygen into the atmosphere
