Summary This lab covered surface and strain hardening of 1045 steel and the fracture of polymer materials. The 1045 steels harden at the surface with carburization due to high carbon levels creating martensite At the surface. This is useful for wear protection. The polymer materials observed were Samples 1 -4 sample 1 and 3 were polycarbonate due to their Ductile features when stressed to fracture point, it elongated and the fracture was clear and smooth. Polymers 2 and 4 were acrylic’s they had brittle properties no visual changed until fracture and the Fracture was instant and visibly rough and sharp. 2. Results and Observations 2.1 Surface Hardening As Received: 23 /21 /16 Rc 900°C x 15min/Water quench:43 /42 /33 Rc Surface Hardened: Carburized Layer Case Depth Calculation: 68 / / Rc x p = Dt x p = 2.76258 x 10 15 57600 61 / / Rc x p = 1.26x10 -3 mm 1
