Running head: [SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 1 Stress Sarah Moore Saint Leo University When I think of the word ‘Stress,’ I immediately think of something negative, which is not true. Stress is something that challenges you which can be good or bad. Primary and secondary appraisals are very important. When you think of primary appraisal, you are thinking about the things you can cope with, and secondary appraisal, is what you are going to do about it. For example primary appraisal would be, If I was a child and it was storming bad so I could not go to school, I got the chance to stay in the bed and sleep(a good thing) or since I had plans to go play ball with my friends I cant go now(bad thing) or I did not have any plans leaving home this morning anyway because I have the flu so it really didn’t matter. Secondary appraisal would be if a bad storm comes and I am not prepared so I start stressing about what I am going to do in this situation. Coping is confronting a situation and dealing with it. There are 3 different types of coping, appraisal focused, emotion focused, and problem focused. Appraisal focused meaning changing the way you think about a situation. For example, if I just bought a dozen of eggs and drop the whole carton, they all cracked and went all over my new white shirt. I could either get angry or

For example, find ways to keep myself busy to take my mind off issues I may have. Problem focused is coming up with a solution as to how to fix the issues I have. For example, if I have things going on in my life and I don’t release them I just hold it all in I become so stressed so and idea would be everyday write down how I feel so I can release some of that energy out instead of keeping it in building up more stress.
