STUDY GUIDE TEST 1 Be able to define the following terms: Mineral Luster Streak Cleavage Crystal Form Specific Gravity Foliation Vesicular Moh’s Hardness Scale Know the following about rocks: Made of minerals The three families and the rock names associated with each family Igneous Rock- Two types – intrusive (formed beneath the earth’s surface, course-grained, etc.) extrusive (formed at the earth’s surface, fine-grained, etc.) Form from magma/lava What grain size do you get from fast cooling? Slow cooling? Sedimentary Rock- Two types- clastic (made up of the weathered fragments of other rocks, etc.) biogenic (made up of dead critters and plant skeletons) Fossils are found in Sedimentary rocks Are held together with tiny crystals called cement Know the source/origin of coal Metamorphic Rock- Know the two main conditions that create metamorphic rocks and the two mechanisms that create them (hint, small scale and large scale mechanisms) Characteristics of metamorphic rocks (i.e. foliation)
