PROJECT 1: AIR SUNSHINE FLIGHT 5272AbstractThe paper will provide a comprehensive investigation and review of an aircraft accidentinvolving the failure of a reciprocating engine - Air Sunshine, Flight 527, a Cessna 402Cpowered by two Teledyne Continental Motors (TCM) TSIO-520-VB reciprocating engines.Further, the paper will dissect the investigation by providing respective sections within the paper.Sections will include the investigation process of the National Transport Safety Board’s (NTSB),a brief accident overview, and the specifications of the engine. The researchers will then providea component failure analysis using investigation techniques that are beneficial in theinvestigation of a propulsion plant. But focusing on the theme of aviation safety,recommendations to prevent similar propulsion plant failures will be detailed and assessed, thiswill also include suggestions made outside of the accident report where other areas thatauthorities may look into for future research relating to this accident. PROJECT 1: AIR SUNSHINE FLIGHT 5273Project 1: Air Sunshine Flight 527Ever since the world introduced aircraft and the abilities of flying, propulsion systemsand plants across the decades have increasingly become more efficient, safer, and powerful. Thiscan be reflected in the innovative designs of reciprocating engines and their systems, wheremodels such as in-line, horizontally opposed, and radial reciprocating engines power aircraft thatare still operating to this day. However, as all aircraft depend on specific engine types tosuccessfully function, there are various factors that may range from maintenance discrepancies todefective material that can severely affect the structural integrity of a reciprocating engine’smajor components and systems, causing fatal accidents/incidents. So as such events can come ata mounting cost, to learn from these past accidents, investigations should be conducted. Thus,when it comes to the investigation and employing the correct techniques, aircraft accidentinvestigators, in this case, must be familiar with a reciprocating engine’s design and construction(Anderson, 2009). Meaning, how each part of the engine, consisting of the valve train,connecting rods, pistons, cylinders assembly, crankcase, and crankshaft, inter-link in fulloperation and how much force is exerted and experienced. This allows the investigator to tracecertain wear and tear patterns that aid in officially determining probable causes and subsequentlyissue recommendations.
