1.) The Tokugawa Shogunate (1603-1867)- was established by Tokugawa Ieayasu following the successful military campaign that unified Japan under his rule. IT was a military dynasty of hereditary Shoguns which ruled japan. - the shogun ruled the central region directly from today’s Tokyo - rest of country was divided into 250 clans (feudal fiefdoms) each clan headed by Daimyo (or lord) who swore allegiance to Shogun. Each Daimyo had his own private army of samurai (or warrior) class (6% of the population) clear distinction between warrior class and commoners. - Secret Keys to Tokugawa Shogunate’s long rule a. policy of seclusion (isolation): nobody was allowed to leave or come to Japan. b. Elaborate system of surveillance and checks to prevent any attempt to challenge the Shogun’s authority by feudal lords 2.) Matthew C. Perry + 3.) The Meiji Restoration - 1853-1854 -Opening of Japan by U.S. Commodore Matthew C. Perry - Shogun’s acceptance of Perry’s demand triggered political crisis in Japan. Four powerful clans allied to lead an anti-Tokugawa rebellion to topple the Tokugawa Shogunate under the slogan of “Revere the Emperor, Expel the Barbarians” -1868: The anti-Tokugawa clans succeeded in taking over the government after forcing the Shogun to transfer the ruling power to the emperor. - The Emperor Maiji took over the ruling power and established a new political system. The real power was exercised by the oligarh (or the leaders of the Restoration movement). -Extensive Reforms and Modernization
