Be able to define the key terms in each chapter summary 3. Know the major theoretical perspectives, their assumptions, and their view of the world, the basic questions they ask and the sociologist who have influenced each theory. 4. Be able to apply theories, terms and concepts. For example, you should be able to discuss the functionalist perspective [interrelated parts that work together to maintain stability and structure] as well as apply it to a social institution such as education. [function + manifest = get a job. Function + latent = parents have “babysitters” so they can work. Dysfunction + manifest = not everyone has opportunity. Latent + dysfunction = education might leave little motivation. Functions – consequence of social structure with positive effect on stability. Manifest – intended or recognized functions of social institution. Latent –
